7 tips for new team leaders

You've just been promoted to team leader... now what? 🎉

First of all, congratulations! 🥳 Take a moment to celebrate this significant achievement. You've earned it!

Now, as the initial excitement starts to settle, you might be asking yourself, "What's next?" Fear not, here’s a quick guide to help you navigate your new role.

🎒 Get organised:

Grab a giant cup of coffee, a plant for your desk and a notebook for jotting down your ideas and reminders.

Grab the calendar of your choice and establish a workable routine. I like to block out time for my weekly team meetings, project catch-ups, deep work and trips to the gym.

You may also want to consider establishing your team rhythms early. For example a set time for "weekly team praise" can start your leadership off on a positive note.

🧘Channel your inner coach:

It's not just about barking orders. Think Ted Lasso, not Gordon Ramsay!

Encourage, motivate, and always be ready with a high-five (virtual or real).

Make time for one-on-one conversations with your team members and show a genuine interest in both their professional growth and whatever they share about their personal life too!

🎨 Master the art of delegation:

Remember, you're a leader now, not a superhero. You no longer need to be the star player!

That means delegating tasks, and not being afraid to ask for help. Your team’s success is your success.

🗝️ Communication is key:

Keep the lines open. Regular check-ins, feedback sessions, and yes, even the occasional meme in the team chat can go a long way.

Encourage an environment where team members can feel comfortable voicing their ideas and concerns. Clear and consistent communication can prevent misunderstandings and foster a collaborative atmosphere.

🍾 Celebrate wins – big and small:

Did someone nail a presentation? Did a project hit a milestone? Celebrate! Build a culture of recognition and appreciation.

These celebrations don't have to be grand; sometimes, a simple acknowledgment can make all the difference.

For example, just last week in the Teamgage office, we were treated with a surprise trip to the movies to celebrate the end of quarter. It's amazing what a boost Ryan Gosling and some popcorn can bring to a team!

🔁 Embrace continuous learning:

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Attend workshops, read books, and learn from your peers. Stay curious, keep growing and make sure that you share what you've learned with your team.

In fact, "always improving" is one of our values at Teamgage. We measure how many team learnings we conduct each quarter and leaders really have to embrace this mindset of continuous improvement

🤖 Stay humble and human:

Remember where you started and who helped you along the way. Be approachable, empathetic, and never forget the power of a good laugh.

A leader who remains human and humble fosters not only a supportive team environment, but a productive one too.

Conclusion

Stepping into a leadership role is an exciting and challenging journey!

By focusing on building a positive, communicative, and supportive team environment, you'll not only enhance your team's performance but also create a workplace where everyone can thrive.

Keep learning, stay humble, and always lead with empathy!
